On Monday, August 3rd, the History of Discovery Book Club met and discussed Spring Forward by Michael Downing.
This informative, enjoyable little book revealed the history and ongoing controversy surrounding Daylight Savings Time. What was thought to be a energy saving measure has become politicized and implemented in ways that show the fascinating ways in which we view time. Time is an unique human invention because most people see it as a natural force, an element of the universe, rather than a created idea used to help us coordinate. It operates as a social construct, like language, that instructs us how we should organize our days. The trouble surrounding time and its potential “savings” stem form who benefits the most from how we as a society agree to operate. This book was chock full of interesting facts and stories about our relationship with time. Perhaps a bit dense in places but highly enjoyable throughout.
